Hong Kong’s new haven for whisky lovers SAFE Bubbles & Malt is introducing some of the world’s rarest and most revered ‘wee drams’ in a season of summer workshops for connoisseurs.

SAFE Bubbles & Malt has fast become Hong Kong’s new go-to destination for whisky lovers and now they are offering the chance to enjoy legendary Scottish and Japanese whiskies in their summer tasting series.

Speaking about the series, SAFE Bubbles & Malt consultant Eric Huang, one of Asia’s Hong Kong’s foremost whisky experts who is founder of the Taiwan Single Malt Whisky Association, and Taiwanese Ambassador for both Glenfiddich and William Grant & Sons said;

“The workshops unlock the secrets of world’s most revered single malts and cask expressions at one-stop. It is a unique opportunity for whisky connoisseurs to discover rare, precious gems they would normally only find by visiting the distilleries or bottlers in Scotland and Japan”.

Opened in 2015, this haven for whisky lovers is named after the giant steel exterior of Sheung Wan and has styled itself as a safe, harboring the precious and rare spirit goods inside. A trip to SAFE Bubbles & Malt allows aficionados to sample some of the rarest whiskies available that have been sourced directly from prominent and even defunct distilleries around the world.

Boasting an extensive collection of over 700 of the world’s top malt whiskies and 300 premium champagnes, SAFE Bubbles & Malt is the only bar in Asia to have such a prestigious collection, as well as being the only Hong Kong distributor for the Scotch Malt Whisky society, the world’s foremost whisky club.

The new summer series will comprise of eight guided tastings that will occur each week. Starting on 24th July and finishing on 11th September each weekly workshop will be based around a whisky related theme and explore the uniqueness of a particular batch. The summery of the workshops are featured below and are kicked off with samples from the oldest single malt distillery in Japan.

‘The Uniqueness of Yamazaki’ |The tasting of various barrels and oaks from Japan’s oldestand largest single malt distillery, dating back to 1923, includes Yamazaki Limited Edition 2014, Yamazaki Puncheon, Yamazaki Mizunara 2013 and Yamazaki Bourbon Barrel 2013

‘Charisma of sansibar’ | Features choice samples from independent distilleries from Germany, Sansibar, with Sansibar Glengoyne 12 years, Sansibar Longmorn 16 years, Sansibar Glenrothes 25 years and Sansibar Balmenach 35 years.

‘Cherish of Yoichi’ | Sample single cask expressions of 5, 10, 15 and 20 years from famous Yoichi Distillery on the island Hokkaido. Dating back to 1934, the location was chosen by founder Masataka Taketsuru because it was as close as possible to a Scottish climate in Japan.

‘Oyster marriage SMWS’ | Exclusive Scotch Malt Whisky Society single malt casks aged from 12 to 17 years are explored and paired with jet fresh oysters. Featured whiskies include SMWS 3.205 – Bowmore 16 years Ex-Bourbon Cask; SMWS 17.34 – Scapa 11years Ex-Bourbon Cask; SMWS 53.208 – Caol Ila 17 years Ex-Bourbon Cask; and SMWS 121.72 – Isle of Arran 15 years Ex-Bourbon Cask.

‘Legend of Samaroli’ | The workshop introduces Silvano Samaroli, legendary in the Scotch world as an Italian selecting individual casks for bottling great scotches under his own label. His distinguished, personalised selection features Samaroli 1992 Speyside Glen Grant, Samaroli 1992 Sherry Glen Scotia, Samaroli Dream Caol Ila 1984 and Samaroli Lagavulin 1988.

‘Hidden gems of Islay 25+’ | This workshop will feature whisky from the iconic region of Islay in Scotland. The area is renowned for their smoky, peaty single malts and the master class will offer samples of the four rare limited editions: Port Ellen 1982 25 years, Port Ellen 1976 25 years Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask, Bowmore 1969 25 years and Laphroaig (Bourbon Cask) 1986 25 years.

‘Beautiful 80’s| Take a step back in time with this master class that explores classic Scotch vintages from the 1980s including; Bowmore 1989 TWA 23 years, Macallan Full Proof 10 years, Laphroaig 1987 The Whisky Fair and Caol Ila 27 years JWW Old Train Line cask (1979).

‘Memories of Karuizawa’| The final edition in the series will focus on the legendary Japanese independent bottler, Karuizawa. This workshop will showcasing the vaults of fabled Karuizawa, with Asama 1999-2000, Karuizawa 27years and legendary Karuizawa 30 years.
