Like Christmas, The World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards 2013, one of the world’s most prestigious food awards, came and went in a whirlwind last night 29 April 2013 at London’s Guildhall…

Taking first place was the Roca brothers, Joan, Jordi and Josep of restaurantEl cellar De Can Rocain Spain who ranked at No.2 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list 2012. The Roca brothers’ restaurant has gained global acclaim for its combination of Catalan dishes and cutting edge techniques and the passion that they share for hospitality. Joan heads up the kitchen, Jordi is head pastry chef and Josep is head sommelier, in charge of front of house.

Last year’s No.1 –Rene Redzepi’s Noma in Denmark, which has remained The World’s Best Restaurant for three consecutive years, went down one place to No.2.

Previously No.5 in The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list 2012,Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana was awarded third place at the award, taking San Sebastian based restaurantMugaritz, headed by chefAndonu Luis Aduriz, down to No.4.

At No.5 isDaniel Humm’s Eleven Madison Park in New York, up five places from last year, and at No.6,Alex Atala’s D.O.M in Brazil, down two places from No.4.

At No.7, restaurant Dinner by Heston Blumenthal moved up three places from No.10, making it the only UK-based restaurant in the top 10 on the list.

At No.8, another San Sebastian based entry, restaurant Arzak, headed byJuan Mari Arzak and his daughter Elena Arzak Espina, who was awarded the World’s Best Female Chef in 2012.

Bumped up to the top ten at from No.11, chef-ownerHeinz Reitbauer’s restaurant Steirereck in Vienna Austria is now ranked at No.9 on the list, whilst at No.10,Joachim Wissler’s restaurant Vendôme in Bergisch, Gladbach, Germany, moved up a whopping 13 places from No.23!

Other surprises of the evening includedHeston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, which was at No.13 in last year’s list, moving down to No.33. The restaurant is often praised for the unique culinary experience it provides for its diners, with its trademark molecular gastronomy cuisine. And with a waiting list that exceeds 2 months, it is easy to believe that the restaurant is regarded as one of the world’s best.

Other notables includeRichard Ekkebus’Amberwhich has been awarded three years in a row, claiming the 36thspot this year whileBen Shewry‘s Attica took home the Highest New Entry award, sponsored by, making its debut on the list at no.21.

New chef to FOUR magazine,Luke Dale Robertstook the Cacao Barry One to Watch award, while his restaurant The Test Kitchen moved up an impressive 13 places from 74thto No.61.

Nadia Santinifrom restaurant Dal Pescatore in Italy was also there to collect her award after being named TheVeuveClicquot World’s Best Female Chef, while Alain Ducasse sadly could not attend the event and arranged for his acceptance speech to be read out at the awards when he was announced as winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award 2013.

The Food

What food would the organisers arrange to be served at one of the world’s most prestigious food awards I hear you ask? Heading up the kitchen and catering for the night was LIMA London; the creation of chef Virgilio Martinez and the Gonzalez brothers, LIMA integrates both traditional and contemporary Peruvian cuisine. Martinez and the team created a bespoke menu for the event, continuing LIMA’s tradition of celebrating the authentic flavours of Peru, serving dishes which included:tiradito(hand dived scallops with yellow aji tiger´s milk and red amaranth);Amazonia ceviche (Amazon fish with wild cocona fruit tiger´s milk and sweet roots); andandes uchucuta (avocado with black quinoa, white quinoa “milk” and cancha corn).
