Tanner & Co on Bermondsey Street, London, will celebrate its initial opening between Thursday 23 and Monday 27May with an interesting concept: by asking diners to put their money where their mouth is and pay only what they think their food is worth. All the restaurant asks for in return is that customers give some feedback on why they decided to pay that amount.
Tanner & Co will, once open, offer guests all day dining in a retro gym-inspired setting with 100 covers. The cuisine is a contemporary take on comfort food – traditional with a modern twist.
The starter menu includes ‘Crispy spam fritter, piccalilli’, ‘Ale braised oxtail and mushroom spring rolls, onion mayonnaise’alongside main dishes such as‘Poached hake, smoked leeks, curry sauce’and‘Liver, bubble and squeak croquettes, onion gravy’.
A range of ‘Packed Lunch’ sandwiches and ‘Eat Your Greens’ salads will also be available, with the addition of a selection of in-house cured and smoked charcuterie and brined pull-ring cans such as ‘Pork rillettes’ for those looking for a small snack.
Love sweet-endings? Tanner & Co’s puddings include ‘Iced Neapolitan parfait, praline wafer’ and ‘Blood orange jelly, vanilla ice cream’.
Set to have a Carvery trolley, the restaurant sounds invitingly theatrical, adding to its already unconventional reputation with news spreading of its ‘pay what you want’ concept. Let’s just hope the team behind Tanners don’t get booed off the metaphorical restaurant stage if diners decide that their dishes aren’t worth digging into their purses for…
