T’is the season to receive accolades, so the saying goes. Or at least it should be this autumn with the release of Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland, New York City, the AA Hospitality Awards and now The National Restaurant Awards which took place on Monday 7 October 2013 at London’s The Brewery.

The night culminated in a series of celebrations and a few (subtle) commiserations, with Brett Graham’s two Michelin starred restaurant, The Ledbury, being knocked from first place – a position it has held in the annual awards for three consecutive years – by Marlow-based chef Tom Kerridge and his pub The Hand and Flowers, also two Michelin starred. It’s been a mind-blowing month for Kerridge who was also awarded the AA Chef’s Chef Award back in September and four AA rosettes. Elatedly, Tom and his wife Beth took to the stage at Monday’s awards to collect their accolade from guest chef Joan Roca of Spain’s El Cellar de Can Roca – the world’s best restaurant (San Pellegrino’s 50 Best Restaurants list) – who played host at the awards after visiting the 25thedition of The Restaurant Show earlier that the day.

Now in its sixth year, Restaurant magazine’s National Restaurant Awards celebrates the 100 best places to eat out in the UK, voted by 150 industry experts. A few changes from last year’s awards included Brett Graham’s The Ledbury falling in the rankings by just one place, now sitting at second place and Jason Atherton’s Pollen Street Social also moving down the list to take third spot. With new restaurant concepts popping up all over London it came as no surprise that Jason appeared in the listings more than once. His latest London establishment, Social Eating House also featured on this year’s list at number 33 while Simon Rogan’s restaurant L’Enclume moved up seven places to number four. Like Tom, Simon has had several reasons to celebrate of late, being awarded 10 out of 10 in the 2014 Good Food Guide earlier in September.

Additional accolades handed out throughout the course of the evening were given to Tom Kitchin’s The Kitchin which was named Best in Scotland; The Hardwick, Best in Wales; Shu, Best in Northern Ireland; 10 Greek Street, Best Wine List; Aiden Byrne’s Manchester House, One to Watch; Bruno Loubet’s Grain Store, Sustainable Restaurant of the Year.
