Hästens Sleep Spa is located directly next to the UNESCO-listed library Biblioteca Joanine, in Coimbra in the centre of Portugal. With its thousands of books and gold-adorned baroque furnishings, it stands as the main inspiration for the hotel decoration. In addition to providing guests with the opportunity to purchase a guided tour of the historic library alongside other exclusive experiences, which can be tailor-made for one’s interests, each room is adorned with 1,200 hand-carved and gold-plated marble books spines. The books – which took 4 months and 18 people to create – have been engraved with titles from both Portuguese and international authors.
The fifteen rooms at Hästens Sleep Spa combine the classic charm of cultural Portuguese heritage with modern style and elegance, where the supremacy of sleep is the key. While the bathroom is inspired by the originality and literary richness of the Joanine Library, the bedroom contrasts with the serenity and tranquillity of a sanctuary of personal comfort, provided by the exclusive Hästens Sleep Spa concept. The lobby is an inspiring gallery area, breath-taking in its fine handiwork. Lined with 419,992 small mosaic tiles arranged geometrically across the floor and walls, it extends up to the ceiling in a representation of the extraordinary bookshelves and ornaments, serving as another tribute to the Joanine Library.
One of the activities guests can join in on once they have checked into the hotel is Bed Talks, which is a conversation led by sleep expert Dr Edie Perry. She discusses various topics that help educate and guide guests to the ultimate sleep experience. Such topics include how the neck should be position, the choice of pillow and how the lumbar spine should be supported, among others. At the Hästens Sleep Spa, pillows are very important and aid in delivering supreme sleep. Coming in five versions (soft high, medium high, firm high, medium extra high and firm extra high), these pillows are made of 100% cotton and filled with goose feathers and down. Most importantly the advantages of these incredible pillows are to provide proper support for the neck and spine, help guests breathe better, relax more and have an infinitely better night’s rest.

The hotel will serve breakfast as well as a complimentary tea-time for its guests, offering small delights to taste the refinements of the Portuguese confectionery as a balm to the body and mind. Lunch and dinner are not formally served so the guests can have the opportunity to sample the historical and typical restaurants of the city. However, the team will prepare salads and other light meals for guests who wish to spend the day at the hotel. All food and beverage during their stay is a courtesy of the hotel, so guests can totally relax and enjoy the experience, not having to worry with any other detail. To complete the body and mind experience, access to the rooftop is exclusive to guests, where they can enjoy stunning views of the city while drinking a mocktail, courtesy of the hotel.
