Gold, In Hand

From its discreet Lugano headquarters, Resonor is making the case for a decidedly tangible form of wealth: Swiss investment gold that clients can actually own, hold, and store.

For an industry built around one of the oldest stores of wealth on Earth, modern investing has become remarkably impersonal. Money moves at the tap of a screen. Portfolios exist behind passwords. Even gold can be bought without anyone ever seeing so much as a glint of the metal itself. Resonor has spent close to four decades taking a different approach. Its premise is disarmingly simple: if you’re buying gold, why not actually hold the physical asset yourself?

From offices overlooking Piazza della Riforma in central Lugano, the Swiss company specialises in physical investment gold, offering everything from the straightforward purchase of bullion to private storage, repurchase agreements, and longer-term acquisition structures. Meetings take place by appointment, and the service is deliberately personal, closer in spirit to a private advisory relationship than to an anonymous transaction.

The company itself predates much of the digital financial world to which it now offers an alternative. Resonor was founded near Zurich in 1987 by two brothers pursuing several business ideas. One eventually became sole owner and focused the company on gold; when he retired, the business was acquired by the family that runs it today. The headquarters later moved south to Lugano, a decision that placed Resonor remarkably close to one of the most important centres of the global gold trade.

Ticino is home to some of Switzerland’s best-known precious-metal refineries: almost 70% of the world’s refined gold is produced within roughly 30 kilometres of Resonor’s headquarters. For a business built around Swiss bullion, it is difficult to imagine a more practical neighbourhood.

Even the company’s name has an unexpectedly neat connection to its present-day purpose. Resonor originally came from a combination of two French words relating to sound recordings—a relic of those early entrepreneurial ideas. Pure coincidence gave it a second meaning: or, its final two letters, means gold in French and several other languages. What began as an unrelated name ultimately proved rather apt.

Gold, of course, hardly needs introducing. Its appeal has survived currencies, governments, crises, and changes in the very definition of money. Yet Resonor’s proposition is interesting precisely because it strips away some of the increasingly elaborate machinery that has grown around investing in it.

Resonor does not substitute physical bullion with goldbacked securities or certificates. Its clients buy physical bars. The distinction is fundamental: rather than holding a document representing an interest in gold, the customer owns the asset itself and can take physical possession of it. Such an approach has remained at the heart of the business, even as financial markets have become more complex and increasingly digital.

Every bar sold by Resonor is Swiss-made, refined in Switzerland, individually numbered, and accompanied by an assay certificate. Clients who prefer not to keep bullion themselves can place it in Resonor’s proprietary Lugano vault, while retaining the ability to access and verify their bars. The storage facility operates in accordance with banking-sector security standards and is insured. Resonor’s vault policy provides full compensation to customers in the event of theft, together with additional cover for operational, cyber, and management risks.

For newcomers, the process is far more accessible than gold’s traditional air of exclusivity might suggest. An initial consultation establishes the client’s financial position, expectations, and preferred investment structure. Once the terms and duration are agreed, Resonor conducts the necessary anti-money-laundering due diligence before proceeding to contract signing, payment, and delivery. The company is supervised by Swiss self-regulatory organisation PolyReg, which oversees compliance with anti-money-laundering requirements and other regulations governing its financial activity.

Where things become more bespoke is in the range of ways clients can structure ownership. Resonor offers accumulation plans that allow purchases to be spread over time, repurchase agreements, secure custody, and deferred-purchase arrangements in which delivery takes place at an agreed future date. Its standard contracts provide the starting point, but larger clients often require structures tailored to their own circumstances and those of their families.

That last point hints at the type of relationship Resonor is seeking to build. Gold here is not presented simply as something to be bought in response to a nervous market or an alarming newspaper headline. For many clients, it forms part of long-term wealth planning or the transfer of assets between generations. For others, its attraction lies in liquidity: physical gold may be held for years, but it can also be sold when required.

When the company first pursued this model, the idea might have appeared old-fashioned beside the increasingly inventive products being offered by traditional finance. Today, the pendulum has shifted. Resonor’s offerings may continue to evolve over the coming decade, but the underlying principle is unlikely to change. The gold, ultimately, remains in the client’s hands.
