A guest chef dinnerwith is a rare event. The three Michelin-starred German chef will not come out from the kitchen of his Restaurant Schloss Berg if it is open, batting off thecelebrity chefstatus, and opting to remain ever present at his intimate, nine-table restaurantfor the past sixteen years. Blessing US soil with his cuisine for the first time, will join forces with Matthew Kirkley at L2O, Chicago.
“It is a true honor for myself and my team to have with us in the kitchen,” says Chef Kirkley, who journeyed to Schloss Berg in January 2014. “I have long admired ’s cooking. The stunning detail and intricacies of his cuisine are breathtaking. This will be the chef’s first visit to Chicago, and his first time cooking on U.S. soil. We’re thrilled that we will have the privilege to welcome him.”
The charming and knowledgeable YildizBau, who oversees what Kirkley calls the “flawless yet warm and personal” service at Schloss Berg, will accompany along with the restaurant’s head sommelier, Daniel Kiowski. Kiowski will feature a wine pairing for the evening built around the restaurant’s home region of the Mosel valley, focusing on two iconic producers from the region, that of Sankt Urbans-Hof and Weingut Markus Molitor. For the former, Kiowski will be pouring single-vineyard Rieslings showcasing the versatility of the varietal through both location and age, including a rare showing of a 1975 Leiwener Auslese. For the latter, he will present the wines of Markus Molitor, a highly respected winemaker whose wines are not available in the United States. While highly venerated for their Rieslings, Kiowski will also be pouring other varietals less common to the Mosel, highlighting the region’s range. “It will be quite a unique opportunity,” says Head Sommelier of L2O, Aaron McManus, “to work with two great houses which represent the best of an area that produces world-class Riesling.”
The ten-course menu for the evening with and Chef Kirkley, each presenting five courses with wine pairings, will be offered at $350 per person, exclusive of tax and gratuity. Seatings are available from6 to 10 pm.
