Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants

This years results are in and for the second year running husband-and-wife team, Virgilio Martínez and Pía Leon have stayed at the top spot of No.1 best Latin American restaurant with their restaurant Central in Lima.Apart from a little place swapping, Lima was closely followed by firm favourites of Boragó in Santiago, Chile, Astrid y Gastón in Lima, Peru, D.O.M. in São Paulo, Brazil, and Maido in Lima, Peru.

Even though Peru still retains its spotlight in the culinary world, Mexico City stayed strong, maintaining three restaurants among the top 10 with Jorge Vallejo’s Quintonil rising to fifth place, Enrique Olvera’s Pujol at No.9, and chefs Mikel Alonso, Gerard Bellver, and Bruno Oteizafell’s restaurant Biko being placed at No.10 on this year’s list.

The ceremony also revealed some fantastic new entrants into the top 50 included; Osso Carnicería y Salumeria in Lima, Peru, Maximo Bistrot in Mexico City,Andrés Carne de Res Chia in Columbia, Restó in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Nicos, and Dulce Patria, both in Mexico City.

Some disappointments were also encountered, with restaurants such as Mexico City’s MeroToro, and Mendoza’s Francis Mallmann 1884, failing to make it into the top 50 rankings.

Other prestigious awards of the evening included Enrique Olvera of Pujol in Mexico City and Cosme in New York City receiving The Diners Club Lifetime Achievement Award. This year’s Chefs’ Choice Award went to Chilean chef Rodolfo Guzmán for his restaurant Boragó, Latin America’s Best Pastry Chef Award went to Astrid Gutsche ofAstrid y Gastón in Lima, whilst No.14 winner Brazilian chef, Roberta Sudbrack, was also crowned Latin America’s best female chef.
