After two years in the No.2 spot, Massimo Bottura’s restaurant in a Modena, Italystepped up to take the top spot in this year’s 2016 gastronomic awards. As voted for by apanel of almost 1,000 gastronomic experts worldwide,the win for Massimoreflects”the chef’s ongoing creativity, immense skill, undimmed passion and fierce determination to defy the odds.” -World’s 50 Best.

The crown was of course taken from the Roca Brother’s, El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, who have claimed the title on more than one occasion but will now reside in second place behind Chef Bottura.

This was a common theme for last nights awards with half of the nominees in the top 20, having recieved a lower ranking. Apart fromEl Celler de Can Roca down to #2,Rene Redzepi’s Noma in Copenhagen went from #3 to #5,Dinner by Heston Blumenthal fell from #7 to #45; Mugaritz in San Sebastian, Spain slipped from #6 to #7,D.O.M. now takes #11 spot after being #9; Bangkok’s Gaggan, dropped from #12 to #23; L’Arpege, is now #19; Astrid Y Gaston in Lima Peru was #14 butthis year it’s #30; Mexico’s Pujol went from #16 to #25; Arzak in San Sebastian, Spain was #17 and this year it has dropped to #21; and Le Bernardin, which was once in the #18 spot is now #24.
