El Racó de Can Fabes to Close its Doors

After 32 years, 3 Michelin star restaurant, El Raco de Can Fabes, is to close. The decision comes after the daughter of founding chef, Santi Santamaria, announced the restaurant “lacked the economic viability necessary to continue as a project based on excellence”.

Santamaria opened the restaurant in 1981 on the site of his ancestral home.El Racó deCan Fabes was awarded its first Michelin star in 1988, its second in 1991, and its third in 1994, maintaining all three until just after Santamaria’s death in 2011.

Santamaria shunned the culinary experiments of his contemporaries, instead choosing to focus on traditional Spanish dishes made with the best ingredients.

Since his death, Santamaria’s daughter Regina has been running the restaurant but has found the commitment to good quality food financially unsustainable. Instead of compromising on her father’s legacy, she has chosen to close restaurant next month.
