This April, Amura by Ángel León at Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town will host one of the Cape’s most compelling culinary events of the season: a two-night four-hands dinner bringing together acclaimed South African chef Kobus van der Merwe of Wolfgat and the marine-led vision of Aponiente‘s Ángel León, interpreted at Amura by Head Chef Arlind Harizaj. Taking place on 26 and 27 April 2026, the limited-seat collaboration offers a rare meeting of two chefs whose cooking is deeply shaped by the coastlines they call home.
Set within the storied surrounds of Mount Nelson, the dinners will explore the parallels between León’s pioneering ocean-focused philosophy and van der Merwe’s strandveld-driven approach, which has made Wolfgat one of South Africa’s most distinctive culinary destinations. Since opening in 2016 in the fishing village of Paternoster, Wolfgat has earned international acclaim for its highly seasonal menus built around indigenous coastal herbs, seaweeds and sustainably sourced seafood gathered close to the restaurant’s shoreline.
For van der Merwe, whose culinary perspective has been shaped by a lifelong connection to the South African landscape, the collaboration is a natural extension of his commitment to place-led cooking. Raised between the Kalahari and the Boland, his food draws on early coastal traditions and an intuitive understanding of local ecosystems—an ethos that finds a clear counterpart in Amura’s own respect for the sea and ingredient-driven storytelling.
The six-course tasting menu, served with curated wine pairings, promises a thoughtful dialogue between these two culinary worlds: León’s groundbreaking marine cuisine, which has redefined the possibilities of seafood gastronomy, and van der Merwe’s restrained, elemental interpretation of the Cape’s shoreline pantry. Together, the menu will trace a conversation between coastlines, shaped by memory, seasonality and a shared sensitivity to landscape.
“Amura was conceived as a space where Chef Ángel León’s pioneering marine cuisine could engage meaningfully with the exceptional ingredients and coastal heritage of the Cape,” says Patrick Fisher, General Manager of Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel. “Kobus shares a similarly thoughtful relationship with landscape and seasonality, making this collaboration a natural dialogue between two distinctive culinary voices shaped by the sea.”
The event comes at a particularly strong moment for Amura, which continues to gather momentum both locally and internationally. The restaurant was recently named on TIME’s World’s Greatest Places for 2026—the only African restaurant to appear on this year’s list—and has also been recognised at the Eat Out Awards with both the Eat Out VISI Style Award and Eat Out Woolworths Best New Restaurant Award. At the LUXE Restaurant Awards, it received New Restaurant of the Year and the Style Award, further cementing its position as one of the continent’s most exciting recent openings.
The dinners begin each evening from 19:00, with staggered seatings accommodating just 35 guests per night. Priced at R2,650 per person, including wine pairing, reservations are now open via DinePlan.
