The Black Series
Embarking on the Black Series theme, the culinary cover images were captured by illustrious photographerRené Riis.René is a specialist in food photography, having worked on more than twenty cooking and wine books and capturing world renowned chefs, like Noma’s René Redzepi and ‘Demonchef’, Alvin Leung. His love of taking chances and challenges has led him to produce cutting-edge, beautiful, bold food images that are prefect for FOUR – The World’s Best Food Magazine.
“It was in fact Antioco Piras (Director at FOUR) who came up with the idea of creating black images. I then thought about creating a series of graphic looking photographs that depict gastronomy at its finest. Ice Cream
For FOUR’s Germany Autumn edition,René shot a new type of avant-garde ice cream and a minimally made up model. “The geometrical design of this ice cream is influenced by a tower in Berlin”,René told us. Jelly Fish & X-Ray Fish
Patience and preperation are certainly some ofRené’s many virtues. For both the International and Germanywinter covers, he had to do a huge amount of research into the logistics of making our vision become a reality.
“For both covers I first of all did some research. The X-ray fish photo was the most difficult. I had to find a place where we could do the X-ray. A very helpful vet in Berlin had the right equipment and was ready to help. It was the first time that they had done anX-ray of a dead fish. The jellyfish photo was easier as I had the luck that the Berlin Zoo Aquarium are one of the leading places when it comesto jellyfish. International Summer
Jumping on the on-trendBrazilian wave, FOUR’s International Summer edition went over to Rio with half the world. Standing above the Carioca-filled city, a chef – one of Brazil’s many wonderful chefs – who looks upon the city with pride in a Christ the Redeemer-esque manner.

Working with some tricky British weather, Steve and Panos shot the wonderful luxury cover, featuring FOUR’s directors, Jakob Siegeris and Antioco Piras, while they took a trip through some of the UK’s best Relais & Châteauxproperties in a Ferrari Spider. Luxury lifestyle couldn’t be better depicted.
