The “Pastry Chef of the Year” competition makes a stop in the Rhineland.

After the first semi finals in Hamburg, young pastry talents in the West of Germany will now have their chance as well to present their original creations and convince the judges on 28 September. Their desserts and chocolates are judged by a panel of stars of the industry, namely Andy Vorbusch (Sööt, Düsseldorf), Matthias Ludwigs (Törtchen Törtchen, Cologne), Jordi Butrón (Espaisucre, Barcelona) und René Frank (La Vie***, Osnabrück).

56 candidates have applied for participation in the Cologne semi finals, all with the goal in mind to get closer to the prestigious title of “Pastry Chef of the Year”. Only five of them have succeeded and may now showcase their skills at the E 50 – The Gourmet Loft in Köln-Frechen. They have to pass three tests in five hours and complete a freestyle dessert, a 3-component dessert with pear, fennel and ricotta and a freestyle praline or petit four.

Judges are looking for technical sophistication and perfect execution, but especially crucial is the taste. Because the jury will taste the sweet creations without knowing who created them.

The Tasting Jury includes…

Stephan Bollig (Pastry, Köln)

Jordi Butrón (Espaisucre, Barcelona)

René Frank (La Vie***, Osnabrück)

Benjamin Kunert (Villa Rothschild**, Königstein)

Matthias Ludwigs (Törtchen Törtchen, Cologne)

Georg Maushagen (Manufaktur für Confiserie & Zuckerbäckerei, Düsseldorf)

Matthias Mittermeier (Pfersich Trend-Forum, Neu-Ulm)

Matthias Spurk (GästeHaus Klaus Erfort***, Saarbrücken)

Andy Vorbusch (Sööt, Düsseldorf)

Alejandro Wilbrand (Hotel-Restaurant Zur Post*, Odenthal)

The two winners will then participate at the finals atthe world’s biggest trade fair Anuga 2015 in Cologne.

Initiator of the competition is the Spanish publisher Grupo Caterdata S.L. The company also organises the German-speaking competition “Chef of the Year” which will be held in Cologne the following day.

The audience will also get to taste the sweet creations and will be able to attend show-cooking sessions with René Frank.
