Created by Meliá Hotels International in partnership with Rafael Nadal, lifestyle hospitality brand ZEL has added a new destination to its growing portfolio with the opening of ZEL Fuerteventura, a beachfront retreat on one of the Canary Islands’ most striking stretches of coastline. Located on Playa de Sotavento, the new hotel introduces the brand’s active, social approach to wellbeing to the Atlantic, bringing together outdoor living, movement, and a relaxed sense of community in a setting shaped by sea and sand.
Now open and accepting bookings for 2026, ZEL Fuerteventura occupies a privileged position within Fuerteventura’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, an area known for its volcanic landscapes, turquoise shallows and long expanses of golden beach. The opening also marks another step in the brand’s international growth, becoming ZEL’s fourth property since its launch three years ago, with further openings planned in Madrid, Cozumel and Crete in the coming months.
Set directly on Playa de Sotavento, a beach long associated with windsurfing and kitesurfing, the resort leans into its surroundings rather than competing with them. The area’s open landscapes and ever-changing tides shape much of the experience here, with the hotel designed to encourage guests outdoors, whether that means time on the water, relaxed afternoons by the pool, or lingering meals that stretch into the evening.
The property features 142 rooms and suites, each designed to reflect the atmosphere of a Mediterranean home. Terraces and balconies frame views of either the Atlantic or the island’s rugged terrain, while direct beach access, an infinity pool and a collection of open-air communal spaces encourage a more easygoing rhythm of stay. At the centre of the hotel is ZEL’s signature patio concept, which reimagines the traditional hotel lobby as a social gathering point designed to evolve throughout the day.
Architecturally, ZEL Fuerteventura borrows from Mediterranean influences while adapting to the island’s volcanic landscape. Natural materials, light-filled interiors and open spaces define the look and feel, creating an environment that feels informal without sacrificing comfort. Rather than centring itself around a fixed schedule, the hotel has been designed to move with the day, from early-morning activity and leisurely lunches to slower afternoons and evenings spent overlooking the ocean.
Wellbeing plays a central role in the ZEL concept, though here it takes a more energetic and communal form. Guests can join running clubs, explore nearby cycling routes, or take part in fitness classes ranging from barre and HIIT to POUND. Scuba diving will also be available, with local professionals offering introductory Atlantic dives for those keen to experience the island from another perspective. Beyond fitness, the hotel plans to host festivals, workshops and classes led by local creatives and tastemakers, reinforcing the social dimension of the experience.
Dining follows a similarly relaxed approach. Mornings begin with speciality coffee from Café de Finca in the courtyard, while lunches and dinners unfold at PARDA, the hotel’s main restaurant, where Mediterranean influences meet local island produce. For lighter meals, the beach club offers a more casual setting by the water, while evenings can end at Voltaje, the hotel’s bar serving cocktails and refreshments with views across the Atlantic.
The arrival of ZEL Fuerteventura also strengthens Meliá Hotels International’s presence on the island. Located next to the recently opened Paradisus by Meliá Fuerteventura—the island’s first all-inclusive luxury hotel, which debuted last October—the two properties together are intended to form a new wellbeing-focused hub on Sotavento Beach. While ZEL focuses on movement, sport and social connection, Paradisus takes a slower, more holistic approach centred around relaxation and immersion in the natural environment.
Guests staying at either property will also have access to the René Egli by Meliá school, where lessons in windsurfing, kitesurfing and wing foiling are led by some of the world’s leading professionals. Combined with activities such as golf, diving and running, the wider offering positions the destination as one aimed at travellers looking to balance downtime with a more active way of travelling.
