Vermelho, Christian Louboutin’s inaugural venture into hospitality, has proudly opened its doors to welcome guests. Operated by Marugal Hotel Management, this charming boutique hotel comprises 13 intimate rooms and is situated in the village of Melides, nestled in the Alentejo region of Portugal. Positioned just inland of the west coast, south of Comporta and Lisbon, this location holds special significance for Louboutin, who has long held a deep admiration for Portugal and its cultural richness. Drawing inspiration from the region’s natural beauty and heritage, Vermelho pays homage to Louboutin’s iconic signature colour, aptly named after the Portuguese word for red.
Fuelled by a passion for the arts, crafts and diverse cultures around the world, Louboutin found himself irresistibly drawn to Melides, a thriving community where creative minds seek inspiration from the unhurried pace of life. Vineyards, rice fields, pristine white cobbled squares, and breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic Ocean on the horizon characterize this tranquil part of the country, forming the idyllic backdrop for this iconic designer’s debut hospitality project.
Within the hotel’s interior, guests are treated to a captivating exhibition of Louboutin’s eclectic and maximalist aesthetic, creating an intimate, warm, and vibrant ambience. Personally curating the furniture, art, and ceramics, Louboutin seamlessly integrates and celebrates the talent and traditions of Portugal. This commitment to authenticity and comfort extends to the dining experience at Xtian, where guests can embark on a culinary journey to discover the treasures of Portuguese cuisine. The Vermelho Bar, meanwhile, offers a relaxed setting for savouring expertly crafted cocktails. Additionally, guests have the opportunity to rejuvenate both body and soul through indulgent spa treatments and massages.
To bring Vermelho to life, Louboutin called upon a team of exceptional talents. Collaborating once again with Lusitanian architect Madalena Caiado, with whom he had previously worked on his Lisbon residence, the hotel’s design seamlessly captures his vision. Long-time friend Carolina Irving has provided valuable guidance on textile creations and overall decoration. Patricia Medina, a friend from Sevilla, has bridged the gap between Iberian artisans’ unique and timeless craftsmanship and contemporary architectural visionaries. Furthermore, renowned French landscape architect Louis Benech, celebrated for his remarkable portfolio of public and private commissions across the globe, has designed the hotel’s gardens to harmoniously blend with the surrounding landscape, showcasing its vibrant yet understated natural beauty.
In the words of Christian Louboutin himself, “I realized many people have the fantasy of designing or owning a hotel. I like to make my dreams a reality. That is why Vermelho is born. This project allows me to empty my storage full of antiques and objects I have purchased over many years! Furthermore, it is an opportunity to show the excellence of many artists and artisans I admire.”
Vermelho Hotel in Melides stands as a testament to Christian Louboutin’s unwavering artistic vision, his affinity for Portugal, and his ability to create immersive experiences. With its captivating design, warm hospitality, and meticulous attention to detail, Vermelho promises guests a truly unforgettable stay in the heart of Alentejo.
