Perched along the sun-soaked shores of Tangalle on Sri Lanka’s south coast, Uga Prāva is a haven of contemporary serenity. The new property comprises just 7 ocean-facing suites, a private beach, a signature restaurant and bar, and a sprawling infinity pool, offering guests an intimate and luxurious connection to the island’s coastal beauty.
“We are thrilled to welcome the first guests to Uga Prāva, the newest property in our beautiful collection of boutique Sri Lankan retreats,” said Priyanjith Weerasooria, Owner and Managing Director of Uga. “Nestled along one of the island’s most breathtaking beaches, the property blends contemporary minimalist design with the lush, tropical charm of its surroundings. At Uga Prāva, guests are invited to slow down, pause under the swaying palms, feel the ocean’s rhythm and share unhurried time with those who matter most. Here, the south coast’s natural beauty and Uga’s signature warmth create the perfect setting for renewal, reflection, and connection.”
The name Prāva, derived from the Sanskrit word for coral (pravala), reflects the hotel’s ethos: a seamless fusion of sophistication, nature, and calm.
A Sanctuary by the Sea
Nestled within acres of lush gardens that cascade down to a private beach, Uga Prāva enjoys a secluded setting just 5km from Tangalle town. The property is accessible from Colombo via private car transfer and serves as a natural addition to Uga’s growing collection, connecting effortlessly with Uga Riva in Negombo, Uga Halloowella in the tea trails of Hatton, and Uga Chena Huts in Yala National Park. Together, they form an exceptional circuit for travellers seeking the essence of Sri Lanka.
Tangalle itself is one of the Southern Province’s gems — a region known for its gentle climate, golden beaches, and world-class surfing conditions.
Minimalist Design, Coastal Soul
With 7 suites overlooking the Indian Ocean, Uga Prāva captures the elegance of the nearby coral reefs through a modern, minimalist aesthetic. Interiors feature clean lines, neutral tones, and natural textures — think soft linens, woven rattan, and pale stone inspired by coral. Each suite opens onto a balcony or terrace designed for unhurried mornings or candlelit dinners, complete with super king beds, sumptuous linens, and spa-like bathrooms with walk-in showers and jacuzzis in select categories.
Three suite types are available:
- Hermit Suites (823–9716 sq ft) — Inspired by local hermit crabs, these two suites offer total privacy, panoramic ocean views, and a private balcony with a jacuzzi.
- Horizon Suites (737 sq ft) — Three elegant suites across different levels, each with super king beds, soaking tubs, and balconies overlooking the sea.
- Coral Suites (636–741 sq ft) — Ideal for families, featuring a king bed, two single beds, and two bathrooms, one with an oversized bathtub.
Ocean-Inspired Dining
As with every Uga property, dining sits at the heart of the experience. Uga Prāva’s signature restaurant and bar offer an indoor-outdoor dining space that invites guests to savour the flavours of Sri Lanka against a backdrop of ocean breezes.
Menus celebrate the country’s rich agricultural landscape and abundant seas, reinterpreting Sri Lankan classics with a creative, contemporary touch. Expect fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and dishes that mirror the vibrancy of the coral reefs. A glossary of Sri Lankan dishes helps guests connect with the culture as they taste their way through the menu.
Breakfast might include a kola kanda herbal porridge or traditional hoppers, while lunch brings seafood poke bowls, Sri Lankan mezze platters, and sizzling fajitas. Dinner transforms into a fine-dining affair, with highlights such as mahi-mahi carpaccio with pol sambol, lagoon prawn curry thermidor with string hopper biryani, and a cinnamon, cardamom and ginger chocolate lava cake for dessert.
Wellness & Rejuvenation
At Uga Prāva’s serene treatment rooms, guests can immerse themselves in ocean-inspired therapies rooted in Sri Lanka’s ancient healing traditions. Treatments use local herbs and natural ingredients, with offerings ranging from holistic massages and reflexology to Balinese rituals and botanical hair therapies.
The signature Uga Spa Ritual offers a complete renewal, combining a Balinese massage, body scrub, and facial in a 150-minute experience designed to restore balance from head to toe. Private yoga and meditation sessions are also available for those seeking a deeper connection to mind and body.
Adventure & Exploration
Uga Prāva offers an ideal base for exploring Tangalle’s natural and cultural riches. Adventurers can surf the waves at Unakuruwa, kayak across lotus-dotted lagoons, or embark on a Lagoon Safari to spot herons, kingfishers, and other birdlife along the Kalametiva Lagoon.
Snorkelling and diving excursions reveal the vibrant underwater world of the south coast, where sea turtles glide between coral reefs, while whale-watching trips from nearby Mirissa offer the chance to see blue and sperm whales in their natural habitat. For a cultural immersion, Uga curates experiences such as cycling tours through historic fishing villages and temple visits that unveil the country’s spiritual traditions.
