Perched above the Aegean, where whitewashed architecture meets the shifting blues of sea and sky, Anax Resort & Spa and Aeonic Suites & Spa, part of the Petinos’ Resorts Of Mykonos collection, offer two distinct expressions of Mykonian hospitality. Though united by a shared commitment to refined service and a deep sense of place, each property speaks in its own voice: Anax embraces the timeless elegance of Cycladic tradition, while Aeonic brings a more contemporary, design-driven perspective to the island’s luxury landscape. At the helm of both is Yiannis Kousathanas, a director tasked with balancing individuality and cohesion across two of Mykonos’ most exclusive stays. In this conversation, we explore the vision behind the properties, the evolving expectations of today’s luxury traveller, and what it means to create spaces that feel both unmistakably Mykonos and entirely their own.
How would you describe each property?
Anax is more timeless, classic Mykonos luxury—spacious, elegant, very connected to the Cycladic identity. Aeonic is more contemporary—design-led, more intimate, and a bit more curated in the overall feeling.
What was your vision for the guest experience?
To create two different ways of experiencing Mykonos, but with the same core values—warmth, attention to detail, and effortless service. Day-to-day, it’s all about how the guest feels. Not just what they see, but how natural and smooth everything is.
What inspired Aeonic’s more modern design?
It was intentional. Mykonos has a strong traditional identity, but we felt there was space for something more contemporary. So Anax respects the classic side of the island, and Aeonic reflects a more modern lifestyle approach to luxury.
How do you create calm in such a lively destination?
By designing the experience around balance. Mykonos is intense, so the hotel needs to feel like a real escape. Privacy, pace, atmosphere—everything is designed so guests can disconnect when they want to.
Tell us about the design philosophy…
Design for us is about feeling first. At Anax, it’s light, open, very Cycladic. At Aeonic, it’s more about texture, mood, and a more curated aesthetic. But in both cases, the goal is the same—to highlight the surroundings, not compete with them.
How do you stay authentic but still offer something new?
By staying true to the essence of Mykonos, not just copying the look. And then expressing it differently. Anax feels more traditional, Aeonic more contemporary—so returning guests can experience the island in a new way.
How do you approach food and drink?
Mediterranean at the core, with strong Greek influence. At Anax, it’s a bit more classic and generous. At Aeonic, it’s slightly more refined and modern. But in both, it’s about quality, simplicity, and atmosphere.
How do you approach wellness?
Wellness today is not just the spa. It’s the whole experience—sleep, privacy, calm, connection to the environment. We try to build that into the stay naturally.
What type of guest does each attract?
Anax attracts guests looking for a full resort experience—space, views, classic luxury. Aeonic attracts a more design-conscious guest—someone who values atmosphere, detail, and a more boutique feel.
What’s most rewarding and most challenging about your work?
Most rewarding is seeing both concepts work exactly as intended. Most challenging is maintaining high standards while keeping each property truly distinct.
How are you approaching sustainability?
More through mindset than statements. Being smarter with resources, materials, and operations—without compromising the guest experience.
How do you keep service consistent?
Through values. The standard is always the same, but the way it’s delivered adapts slightly to each property’s personality.
How important is location?
Very. In Mykonos, location shapes everything—views, mood, rhythm. It directly affects how the guest experiences the stay.
How has guest feedback shaped the hotels?
It helps refine the details. You understand what truly matters to guests and adjust, but without losing the identity of the property.
Where is luxury hospitality in Mykonos going?
More towards meaningful, personalised experiences. Less generic, more intentional. More focus on privacy, wellbeing, and emotional connection. That’s exactly where both our properties fit.
One must-do experience at each?
At Anax—sunset with a view of the Aegean. Simple but powerful. At Aeonic — just experiencing the atmosphere of the hotel itself. It’s more about how it feels than one single moment.
