For years, recovery was treated as something to be earned: a reward reserved for the end of a demanding project, a successful quarter or an especially relentless period of work. Philippa Harvey, Head of Holistic Health at SHA Spain, sees it differently. Here, she discusses the physical cost of remaining constantly “on”, the subtle warning signs frequently missed by high achievers and why recovery may become one of the most important leadership skills of the future.

Many high-performing leaders still see recovery as something that comes after success. Why is this mindset no longer compatible with longevity or sustained performance?

High-performing leaders often grow up in systems that equate rest with weakness and relentless output with excellence. But from a holistic longevity perspective, this mindset is not only outdated; we now know it is biologically unsustainable. In holistic and integrative medicine, the nervous system is the foundation of all health.

When leaders push through exhaustion, they stay stuck in sympathetic dominance (“fight or flight”). The body’s stress-response system was never built for constant activation. This pattern erodes the “terrain” of the body, the internal ecosystem that determines resilience and vitality. Without regular recovery, the system loses its capacity to self-regulate.
We have seen that a fatigued leader can still produce, but cannot lead.

Recovery upgrades the human system so leadership is not built on depletion. It is important to understand that, from a holistic perspective in mind–body science, sustained clarity comes from a smooth, unblocked flow of Qi (energy), blood, and oxygen.

In a few words, recovery is not what you do once you have succeeded. Recovery is what makes success sustainable. This is the foundation of longevity, performance, emotional stability, and the ability to create with clarity, rather than survival instincts.

Burnout is often framed emotionally, but from a medical perspective, what is actually happening in the body and brain when recovery is consistently missing?

Burnout is often described as emotional exhaustion, but physiologically, it is a multisystem breakdown caused by a prolonged lack of recovery. It disrupts hormones, the autonomic nervous system, brain function, immunity, digestion, and even cellular ageing. In essence, it is a collapse of internal homeostasis; the body gradually loses its ability to self-regulate and maintain balance.

Over time, this chronic dysregulation can literally shrink stress-sensitive regions of the brain. And because it happens slowly, we begin to normalise the very frequencies of stress we are living in. From a holistic health perspective, burnout is the endpoint of a long-standing pattern of collapsed physiology. Should we fail to address these early patterns, such as disrupted sleep, constant hypervigilance, poor digestion, and emotional flattening, our emotional capacity will inevitably collapse alongside the body.

This is when we begin to see irritability, detachment, cynicism, and finally a feeling of being overwhelmed. At that stage, what looks like “emotional burnout” is actually the body and brain shifting into conservation mode. The system is protecting itself by shutting down non-essential functions in an attempt to survive.

The concept of “recovery-led living” is gaining attention. What does this look like in practice for someone who remains ambitious and professionally engaged?

“Recovery-led living” does not mean working less, caring less, or dimming ambition. In the SHA holistic approach, it means structuring life so that recovery drives performance, rather than trying to fix exhaustion after it appears.

Performance is built around rhythm, not intensity. For example, instead of long pushes followed by collapse, a person should create daily micro cycles of activation and restoration. We suggest 90 to 120 minutes of focused work, followed by a minimum of 5 minutes to relax the nervous system, with breathwork or a short walk.

Good sleep becomes a strategic asset, with evening routines such as no blue light two hours before bedtime, some gentle yoga or meditation. Nutrition that regulates inflammation and energy, SHA places strong emphasis on anti-inflammatory, plant-forward, stable glycaemic eating. For an ambitious person, this means protecting the gut and microbiome to support immunity and mood.

For holistic recovery-led living, we like to prove that the energy spent on ambition should be sustainable, with balanced emotional and physical wellness, not sacrificed.

From a longevity standpoint, how does chronic stress affect cognitive performance, decision-making and leadership clarity over time?

From a longevity standpoint, chronic stress gradually reshapes the brain and body’s regulatory systems. Over time, this erodes the very faculties leaders depend on: clarity, memory, emotional stability, intuition, and strategic thinking.

When physiological and psychosocial stress disrupts the interplay between the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems, these systems fall out of sync, and leaders lose the internal coherence required for wise, steady, long-range decision-making.

This cumulative “wear” makes leaders less adaptable and dramatically reduces long-term capacity for clarity and high-quality decision-making. In holistic health, we see a lack of sustained mental energy. There is a cross-system communication failure, and communication is essential for leadership clarity, both internally and externally.

When executives arrive at SHA, which health or performance indicators most commonly surprise them—and why are these signals so often overlooked?

From a holistic health perspective at SHA, the indicators that most surprise executives are not the dramatic ones; they’re the subtle, chronic imbalances that have quietly accumulated beneath a high-functioning exterior. This is pointed out when the executive has an energy assessment evaluation, in which diagnostics mix emotional impact with the physical. We pick up a high sympathetic tone, the “always on” state, shallow breathing patterns affecting the oxygen and lungs, and fragmented sleep architecture. These things are often overlooked as executives adapt so completely to pressure that stress becomes invisible, and it is normalised.

Metabolic stress shows that, independent of calories, there is inflammation and difficulty in weight loss. Irregular digestion patterns are dismissed as “normal for my lifestyle”; then stress and irregular eating patterns amplify the imbalance, creating a self-reinforcing cycle.

Executives give space to the possibility that there are signs of long-term emotional and cognitive fatigue, which may lead to burnout. This is sometimes surprising among people who are used to leading others and holding everything together. In osteopathy, for example, we find postural strain, chronic fascia tension, restricted mobility and jaw clenching.

Holistically, the core reason these signals are so consistently missed is that most executives are conditioned to measure success by output rather than internal state. They learn to disconnect from their bodies to keep performing.

Why are structured reset environments more effective than attempting to restore balance within everyday life, even for highly disciplined individuals?

Even the most disciplined individuals struggle to restore true balance within their everyday environment because the very conditions that created the imbalance are still present. At SHA, a structured reset works differently; it interrupts the entire pattern.

Daily life is full of micro stressors, habitual cues, and unconscious behaviours that constantly pull the nervous system back into a reactive state. In a dedicated health environment, the body finally has permission, space and time to downshift. Nutrition, sleep, therapeutic treatments, movement, and recovery are orchestrated intentionally rather than squeezed between meetings. A reset is also effective because of expert containment. Highly driven people are excellent at pushing themselves, but not always at listening to themselves. In short, structured reset environments succeed because they change the context, not just the behaviour. When the body is taken out of survival mode and placed into a space designed for recalibration, balance doesn’t have to be performed; it naturally re-emerges.

Do you see recovery becoming a core leadership capability in the future, alongside strategy, resilience and emotional intelligence?

Absolutely. Recovery is quickly becoming a foundational leadership capability because modern performance demands more than endurance; it requires regulation. We’re moving into an era where leaders are judged not only by how well they perform under pressure, but by how effectively they can reset their nervous system, sustain clarity, and maintain long-term cognitive and emotional capacity.

In high-stakes environments, the leaders who excel are those who can shift fluidly between activation and restoration. That capacity protects decision-making, creativity, emotional steadiness, and the ability to inspire others. Without intentional recovery, even the most resilient individual eventually becomes reactive instead of responsive.

What we see at SHA is that recovery is not passive; it’s a skill. It involves understanding your own physiology, knowing how to downshift from chronic stress states, and designing routines that support metabolic, emotional, and cognitive restoration. Leaders who cultivate this become more adaptable, more present, and more sustainable in their impact.
So yes recovery is becoming as essential as strategy or emotional intelligence. It’s the unseen engine that allows those other capabilities to function at their highest level.

If there is one recovery habit or mindset shift that consistently delivers the greatest long-term return for sustained performance and healthy ageing, what would it be—and why?

The most transformative shift is learning to treat recovery as a daily rhythm, not an emergency response. For many high performers, recovery is something they turn to only when they are exhausted or overwhelmed. But the body and brain aren’t designed to regenerate in occasional bursts; they thrive when restoration is woven into everyday life.

The simple mindset change is this: recovery is not the opposite of performance; it is the source of it.
When leaders begin to honour micro recovery moments throughout the day through nervous system resets, intentional pauses, regulated breathing, restorative movement, adequate sleep, and nourishment, their physiology stabilises. Cortisol normalises, inflammation decreases, cognitive clarity improves, and the ageing process slows because the system is no longer constantly operating in deficit. Holistically, leaders need to reassociate their “head” or mental existence with a healthy, functional body.

This shift works because it changes the baseline, not just the moments of crisis. Instead of oscillating between overextension and repair, the body remains in a sustainable, adaptive state where energy, creativity, and emotional steadiness are preserved.

In essence, the most powerful long-term habit is learning to downshift before you need to, making recovery a consistent practice rather than a rescue strategy. That’s what supports high performance today and healthy ageing over decades.
