When it comes to a city break hotel, location is everything. After all, there’s not much point in venturing across the continent if it takes longer than the flight time to see anything.
Luckily, tucked away in the very heart of Berlin awaits Hotel de Rome – a hedonistic haven offering everything from creative Italian cuisine to a hidden underground spa.
Part of the Rocco Forte portfolio, this 108-room property is perched in the historic Bebelplatz, a regal square found in the trendy Mitte district.
Its location couldn’t be more central – Brandenburg Gate is just down the road, whilst sights such as the Berliner Dom, Museum Island and Alexander Platz can be reached in the opposite direction.
But whilst there’s plenty to explore outside Hotel de Rome’s walls, plenty of intrigue also awaits within. One of the most prestigious hotels in Germany’s capital, this impressive building once called itself the headquarters of the Dresdner bank.
Now a hive of hospitality, guests can still admire traces of its past – the grand ballroom was once the old cashier’s hall, whilst the ethereal swimming pool is housed in what was once a highly guarded jewel vault.
The service is slick, the staff are efficient and the interiors are practically drool-worthy. Beautifully contemporary, the lobby alone features a striking neon birdcage that dangles from the ceiling above a foliage-filled table. If you’re a fan of modern art, you’ll adore it.
Despite its coveted location, this is a large hotel – with 71 rooms and 37 lavish suites to choose from. All come complete with the Rocco Forte trademark details – zippy wifi, cosy robes and of course, quintessentially stylish interiors courtesy of famed Olga Polizzi and Tommaso Ziffer.
Ideal for relaxing, the modern decor includes neutrally coloured walls, patterned carpets, substantial bathrooms and vast beds to sink into.
With plenty of space, as well as beautiful sprawling views across the city, Hotel de Rome’s abodes make ideal pitstops during a day of exploring.
Handy extras include wide televisions, luxury toiletries and the all-important Nespresso machines (which come complete with glossy boxes of different capsules to try). Bathr
For the ultimate wow factor, splash out on the awe-inspiring Royal Bebel Suite. It’ll set you back over 15,000 euros per night, but the enormous space, with its 3.2m-high ceilings, blend of contemporary meets antique surrounds and intricately elegant interiors will leave you dreaming for decades.
Hotel de Rome’s dining is as decadent as its decor. There’s plenty to enjoy – whether it be pretty platefuls at La Banca or signature serves at La Banca Bar.
The latter serves a range of classic Italian and Mediterranean dishes under the direction of Michelin-starred Chef Fuvio Pierangelini. Ravioli, spaghetti, tagliatelle – if you’re a pasta fan, you’re in luck with the menu.
In the mornings, breakfast is also served here. The buffet brims with bottomless indulgence – platters of cold cuts, cereals and fresh breads, as well as additional a la carte options.
If you enjoy a more intimate start to the day, treat yourself to room service for a spread that arrives with extreme timeliness upon a classic white cloth laden table.
Should tipples take your fancy, the impressive La Banca Bar has a cocktail list that tempts Berliners and tourists alike – spiced mojito, anyone?
Don’t miss an elevator trip down to the lavish De Rome Spa, housed down in the former jewellery vault.
Swim through the tranquil pool surrounded with pillars or recline upon one of the many loungers, aided by the addition of fashion fodder magazines and hot teas. There’s also a newly renovated steam room and sauna to try out too.
Elegantly modern, this beautiful Berlin hotel combines majestic interiors with welcoming staff to create a city break that’s not only chic but comfortable too.
The iconic Marlene Dietrich once sang “I still keep a suitcase in Berlin,” and after a visit to Hotel de Rome, you will too.
