The history of Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich traces back to Christmas Eve in 1838, when Johannes Baur, a young baker from Vorarlberg in Austria, founded the city’s inaugural grand hotel, the Hotel Baur. Exactly 185 years later, on the days preceding Christmas, this historic icon is rejuvenated, reopening its doors to global travelers and the local community after an extensive renovation.
Esteemed Paris-based interior designer Tristan Auer was the mastermind behind the reimagination of Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich, seamlessly blending historical elements with contemporary style. Since its opening over a century ago, the hotel has welcomed many famous guests. In 1845, the illustrious pianist and composer Franz Liszt resided in the Hotel Baur during the Beethoven Festival, while the 19th-century British literary giant Charles Dickens, renowned for works like “A Christmas Carol,” also stayed at the hotel with his family.
