The highly anticipated £225million property is officially open.

After ten years of intricate construction, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland has officially opened its doors to guests. The £225million property marks the 200th hotel for the brand, which has been built on the unusual site of a formerly abandoned quarry. .

Developed by Shimao Group and managed by IHG, the beautiful hotel stretches 88 metres underground, with a design that’s been praised for being ‘one of the architectural wonders of the world’ by the National Geographic Channel’s MegaStructures series.

InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland aims to combine the brand’s signature luxury with revolutionary design, using the wonderfully unique location to create a new age of hospitality.

Unlike most properties, only two floors are actually above ground – with 16 below ground, including 2 floors entirely submerged. Expect ample luxury from the  336 rooms and suites, which offer spectacular views of waterfalls and the surrounding cliffs.

The stunning underwater loft offers two awe-inspiring levels: the landing deck at water level houses the outdoor terrace and bedroom, whilst the underwater living room are encased within a turquoise aquarium where guests will be surrounded by schools of fish swim by. These floors also come equipped with a 24/7 butler service to cater to every whim.

Water is a key focus for the new opening. The rooms, restaurant, and sports complex – complete with a swimming pool – all look out to an aquarium. There’s also a waterfall running through its centre and into the bottom of the quarry.

Lin Wang, Chief Marketing Officer, Greater China, IHG, told FOUR: “We are delighted to be joining forces with Shimao Group again to open InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland – an architectural masterpiece which is a wonder and beauty in the global hospitality industry.”
