Iniala Valletta enters its most ambitious chapter yet, with new designer suites, destination restaurants, a longevity-led wellbeing concept and the launch of ION at Sea.

Iniala Valletta has always felt closely tied to its setting. Set among historic Maltese houses and ancient vaults overlooking the Grand Harbour, the property brought a new kind of design-led luxury to Malta when its first wing, Harbour House, opened in 2020. Now, the hotel group founded by entrepreneur and philanthropist Mark Weingard is on the cusp of its biggest transformation yet, with a 2026 expansion that will turn Iniala Valletta into what the brand describes as a “boutique resort at a city scale.”

Opening in stages from summer 2026, the expansion will introduce the Solis wing, the Magistero wing on Republic Street, and the FrancoMaria Suite, adding 21 new keys to the existing offering. It forms part of a wider growth plan that will see Iniala Valletta reach 90 rooms by 2027 and 150 by 2030, woven through Valletta’s historic eastern quarter. The project follows a series of milestones for the property, which has retained its status as Malta’s only Forbes Five-Star hotel for five consecutive years and last year became the island’s first two-Michelin-Key hotel.

The next phase also brings a broader evolution of Iniala’s culinary and wellbeing world. By 2027, the property will be home to four signature dining destinations. Already welcoming guests are ION Harbour by Simon Rogan and ION at Sea, the seasonal extension of ION Harbour aboard a luxury yacht, available from June to October. They will be joined by Anaalā by Chef Ian Kittichai, opening later this year, and SiR by Simon Rogan, set to open next year. Alongside this, the hotel will introduce OneAvant, a state-of-the-art guest management system that allows guests to manage their stay digitally, from booking bespoke experiences and ordering food to speaking with the concierge and controlling lighting, curtains and climate from a phone or in-room tablet.

Wellbeing is also being significantly expanded. Vitalis, formerly Iniala Modern, is undergoing a full refresh, with its five harbour-facing suites being reimagined to align with the hotel’s evolving design language. A new massage and wellbeing room will also be added. The Spa at Iniala Valletta is being transformed with elevated treatment rooms and a new cold plunge pool, marking the first phase of Within, a longevity and wellbeing ecosystem launching later this year. Created in partnership with Saint James Hospital, Within will integrate advanced diagnostics and aims to set a new benchmark for premium wellness in Malta.

Service remains central to the expansion. The new chapter is led by General Manager Claudia Schwarze, formerly of Aman Venice and Amankila Bali, who oversees Iniala’s intuitive service philosophy. Rooted in the Thai principles of Metta, meaning loving-kindness, Nam Jai, generosity from the heart, and Sabai, tranquillity, the approach is intended to keep the human element at the centre of the experience, even as the hotel grows in scale and ambition.

As Mark Weingard, Founder of Iniala, explains: “Iniala Valletta was never going to be just a hotel. From the moment we opened our doors in Valletta, we knew we were building something far greater, a new kind of luxury, one that places world-class design, extraordinary gastronomy, and transformative wellbeing at the very heart of one of the world’s great historic cities. The 2026 expansion is not an addition to what we have built. It is the realisation of what we always intended Iniala to become.”

The first major opening will be Solis, launching in August 2026. Set just behind the flagship hotel, the nine-suite Maltese palazzo has been designed by Madrid-based studio A-cero, founded by Joaquín Torres and Rafael Llamazares. The building will feature the Solis Club, an exclusive rooftop pool with views over the Grand Harbour skyline, as well as Anaalā, a rooftop restaurant by celebrated Thai chef Ian Kittichai.

A-cero has approached Solis through the idea of excavated architecture, carving modern, sculptural spaces within the building’s millennial stone. The result is intended to feel both contemporary and deeply connected to Valletta, with bespoke furnishings, stone surfaces and carefully considered natural light drawing attention to the raw texture of local globigerina limestone.

On the rooftop, Anaalā will bring Kittichai’s fire-driven Thai cooking to Malta, pairing the aromatic elegance of Thai cuisine with Valletta’s golden light, sea air and harbour views. Following the success of Anaalā at Iniala Beach House in Thailand, the opening in Malta is a natural next step for the concept.

“After the success of Anaalā at Iniala Beach House in Thailand, I am excited to bring those same fire-driven flavours from the sands of Natai Beach to the historic heart of Malta,” says Chef Ian Kittichai. “My mission has always been to push the limits of how people perceive Thai food, and at Iniala Solis, we are marrying that authentic Thai heritage with modern techniques to create a truly global gastronomic experience.”

2027 will see the opening of Magistero, an 11-suite wing on Valletta’s historic Republic Street. Designed by Verter Turroni of Italy’s Imperfetto Lab, Magistero is conceived as a bold 21st-century statement, with each suite envisioned as a world of its own. Every object has been created specifically for the project, with functional sculptures replacing conventional hotel furnishings and no two rooms sharing the same pieces.

Magistero will also introduce a world-first hotel collaboration that replaces traditional televisions with a cinematic in-room experience. Hisense L9Q Laser Projectors will cast screens across the walls, paired with state-of-the-art Devialet speakers. Bathrooms and wardrobes have been co-designed with Greta Design, while curated artworks and soft furnishings from Turroni’s collaborative network of artists are intended to give each suite a more personal, lived-in quality.

At the heart of the Magistero building will be SiR by Simon Rogan. Designed as both a restaurant and social hub, SiR will bring a more informal, convivial side to Rogan’s presence in Valletta. The dining room, designed by Imperfetto Lab, will play with texture, light and unexpected materials.

“SiR draws on many influences but remains rooted in its surroundings, celebrating Malta’s heritage and exceptional produce,” says Chef Simon Rogan. “I thrive on that pursuit, working closely with my team to continually raise standards with every service, and lead by example. The concept is built around sharing plates, innovative food, and great service in beautiful surroundings where people can come together and enjoy themselves.”

Rogan’s role at Iniala is also deepening through ION Harbour, the hotel’s established two-Michelin-starred restaurant. With the chef increasing his on-site presence, the aim is to continue pushing the restaurant to new levels while expanding the wider culinary ecosystem around it.

This year also sees the launch of ION at Sea, an intimate new private dining experience that extends the spirit of ION Harbour onto the water. Running from 19 June to 4 October 2026, the experience takes place aboard an iconic Riva 44 yacht on Malta’s Grand Harbour and is designed for just one private booking each evening. Depending on the format, it accommodates between two and four guests, making it one of the most exclusive chef’s table experiences in the Mediterranean.

ION at Sea is led by chef Charlie Wilson and restaurant manager Arsen Brahaj, bringing members of the team from Simon Rogan’s one-Michelin-starred Aulis Phuket to Malta for the season. Working closely with Rogan and executive chef Oli Marlow, Wilson has created a seasonal tasting menu rooted in the produce of the Maltese islands, using ingredients from both land and sea. Dishes are served across several courses and finished in front of guests, with the chefs sharing the stories, ingredients and craft behind each plate. Wine pairings are available to add, while all drinks must be pre-ordered.

There are two ways to experience ION at Sea. The Dinner Cruise runs from 19:30 to 22:30, offering dinner aboard the Riva 44 as Valletta and the Three Cities move through the evening light. It is priced at €1,995 for two guests, with additional guests at €495 each. The Ultimate Cruise runs from 14:30 to 22:30, combining an afternoon and evening on the water with a cruise along Malta’s southern coastline, time to swim in pristine waters, and dinner at anchor. It is priced at €3,495 for two guests, with additional guests at €495 each. A 10% service charge applies, and sailings are available Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday throughout the season.

The final new accommodation highlight is the FrancoMaria Suite, set within Harbour House. Named after Franco and Maria, the couple who lived in the space for 60 years, the suite pays tribute to the building’s domestic history while giving it a refined new identity. Set within vaulted stone interiors, it features bespoke furniture by Sebastian Brajkovic and Greta Design, marble flooring, neutral tones and soft blush accents. A separate living room, dressing area and expansive bathroom give the suite a distinctly residential feeling.

Taken together, the expansion marks a significant moment not only for Iniala but for Valletta itself. By threading contemporary design, outstanding gastronomy and next-generation wellbeing through the city’s historic limestone architecture, Iniala is moving beyond the boundaries of a conventional hotel. By 2027, the plan is for 90 rooms and five dining destinations; by 2030, 150 rooms will form a boutique resort embedded within the life of the UNESCO World Heritage capital.
