Rooted in Rapperswil and Zurich yet shaped by a dialogue that spans continents, Domeisen is a third-generation Swiss jewellery house where fine craftsmanship meets philosophical inquiry. Led by master goldsmith Jörg Domeisen and artist Liz Domeisen, the maison stands apart for its deeply personal approach to jewellery making—one that views each piece not merely as adornment, but as a sculptural expression of material, meaning and time. Within their atelier, Switzerland’s finest goldsmiths work slowly and deliberately, honouring tradition while allowing intuition and art to guide the hand.
At the heart of Domeisen’s practice is a reverence for gemstones as living elements—chosen and composed with the sensitivity of an artist rather than the precision of an assembly line. This ethos is embodied in collections such as Makbium, inspired by Korean aesthetic philosophy, and in recent creations like Space Candy, a ring crafted entirely in Switzerland from rough stone to finished form. Together, Liz and Jörg create jewellery that invites contemplation as much as it commands attention, bridging the worlds of art, philosophy and wearable design.
Beyond the atelier, this philosophy extends into Domeisen’s store in the heart of Zurich, where clients are invited to encounter the collections in person. Here, Amadeus Domeisen shares some insights into the craftsmanship, creative dialogue and material devotion that define Domeisen’s jewellery today.
Domeisen pieces balance fine art, philosophy and heritage. How do these elements interact when you begin conceptualising a new creation?
Since our ancestor Hans Thumysen (Domeisen) settled in Zurich in 1430 as a blacksmith, twelve individuals over the centuries have carried forward and refined this craft. With Hansjörg Domeisen (born 1934) and Jörg Domeisen (born 1968) as the 11th and 12th Domeisen master goldsmiths, this lineage strongly roots and empowers our artistic, avantgarde and bold works of art. Heritage is not a limitation for us; it is a foundation. Today by interacting with different cultures and philosophical ideas, we expand our horizons and free ourselves artistically, while remaining deeply connected to the tradition that runs in our blood. This balance allows us to honour our history while consciously building a legacy for the future.
Every piece is handmade by some of Switzerland’s most skilled goldsmiths. What does ‘slow craftsmanship’ mean to you in an era defined by rapid production and digital precision?
We take great pride in our atelier and in our skills. Jewellery making evolves with time, and new technologies open many possibilities. Working traditionally while also operating at the most advanced level of craftsmanship allows us to elevate our jewellery and bring each piece to perfection. There is a distinct feeling our work conveys—something that can only be produced in our atelier. Jewellery is deeply connected to the body; it is about the sensation on the skin. We focus on making each piece blend with its protagonist, the wearer. This level of individuality can only be achieved through time-intensive, handmade work.
Domeisen has an in-house atelier in the old town of Rapperswil, developing continuously since 1961. Today, it spans three floors and is equipped with both the latest tools and machines, as well as historical instruments. Slow craftsmanship is how we maintain our standards and ensure that every piece remains personal, authentic and enduring.
Your new ring, Space Candy, was entirely produced in Switzerland—from cutting the rough gemstone to its final setting. What inspired this piece, and what does it represent within the Domeisen universe?
Space Candy represents a step into the future while merging generations and international influences. The passion for gemstones has been shared across three generations, and with this ring we take that passion further by creating jewellery starting from raw, mined material. From our in-house Domeisen gold alloy to the rough gemstone itself, we decide how to cut, shape and set every element, maintaining full control throughout the process. This gives us complete authorship of the jewellery, from the gemstone cut to its integration into the final piece.
The result is an exciting, powerful and forward-thinking ring. Space Candy reflects the Domeisen universe: free-spirited, light and fully embracing both artistry and life.
In an era increasingly defined by speed, replication and spectacle, Domeisen offers a rare counterpoint: jewellery shaped by patience, partnership and purpose. Their work reminds us that true luxury lies not in excess, but in intention—where every cut, curve and surface carries the imprint of the human hand.
Through their enduring commitment to craftsmanship and artistic integrity, Liz and Jörg Domeisen continue to redefine contemporary fine jewellery as something intimate, thoughtful and profoundly alive—an ethos that can be experienced first-hand at their Zurich boutique, where the maison’s collections are presented as works of art rather than objects alone.
