Amanjena, the serene Marrakech retreat long known for its pink-hued palatial architecture and tranquil gardens, has reopened following a sensitive refurbishment that preserves its original character while subtly elevating the guest experience. Surrounded by palm and olive trees on the outskirts of Morocco’s Red City, the resort—whose name translates to “peaceful paradise”—has welcomed guests since 2000 and now enters a refreshed new chapter.
The project pays careful tribute to Amanjena’s 25-year heritage. Its harmonious layout remains as architect Ed Tuttle envisioned it, while artisans and craftspeople moved through its colonnades and courtyards restoring pink tadelakt and rustic pisé finishes, hand-laying zellige tiles, repairing furniture, and nurturing the landscaped grounds. These enhancements honour Aman’s design ethos: an unwavering respect for place, proportion and craft.
Ed Tuttle’s original architecture—rooted in the symmetry of the Alhambra and the geometry of Marrakech’s 12th-century Menara Gardens—remains the defining spirit of the resort. His combination of Moorish detail and Aman’s minimalist language created what the brand describes as “both monumental and meditative proportions,” defined by grand colonnades, serene water features and an emerald reflective bassin that still forms the heart of the property.
A major focus of the refurbishment is wellness. Amanjena has expanded its facilities with a newly designed two-storey fitness centre, fitted with Technogym equipment for cardio and strength training. Above it, a light-filled yoga and movement studio anchored by a warm fireplace offers a calming space for stretching and meditation. These additions complement the resort’s marble-clad hammams, clay tennis courts and wide-ranging restorative treatment programmes.
The culinary offering has also evolved with the introduction of Arva, a signature Aman restaurant led by Chef Francesco Balloo, whose background includes Michelin-starred kitchens across Europe. Arva brings seasonal Italian cuisine inspired by the simple, heartwarming dishes of Italian tradition, designed for sharing and rooted in local ingredients. Guests can dine indoors, outdoors, or in the relaxed bar area, with signature plates such as Sogliola alla Mugnaia, a pan-seared local sole, and Agnello e Caponata, blending Moroccan lamb with Italian methods.
A new accommodation category also debuts: the Three-Bedroom Pool Villa. Ideal for families and groups seeking space and privacy, it expands the resort’s portfolio to 40 Pavilions and Villas. The villa features a master suite with dressing areas and an en-suite bathroom, a third suite housed in an adjoining Pavilion, and generous indoor and outdoor living spaces. Two gazebos, a heated 36-square-metre pool, lounge areas, a daybed, a fireplace and a workspace create an environment designed equally for socialising and quiet retreat.
Beyond the resort’s walls, Amanjena continues to celebrate Morocco’s cultural landscape through immersive experiences. Guests can journey into the Agafay Desert by camel for an intimate Berber dinner beneath the stars or explore the meditative craft of pottery through hands-on ceramic workshops—experiences that offer a glimpse into local traditions that have remained unchanged for centuries.
Entering its 25th year, Amanjena reopens with a renewed commitment to serenity, design, and cultural connection—ushering in a new chapter while keeping timelessness at the centre of the guest experience.
