When Joël Robuchon lost a star at his London-based restaurant, L’Atelier, in the Great Britan and Ireland Michelin Guide 2014, news spread fast. Now, it seems, he’s planning a comeback with a truly ingenious secret weapon: award-winning chef and long-term culinary partner, Xavier Boyer, who is set to take over the kitchen at L’Atelier as the new executive chef.
Xavier – who has had a long working relationship withJoëlfor over 12 years – is a native of Montpellier, France, and studied culinary and pastry arts at Paris’ L’Ecole Superieur de la Cuisine Francaise and then graduated from Lycée Saint-Joseph du Parchamps in Boulogne.
Over the last few years Xavier has worked with Joël in New York, Taipei and now London. In 2009, Xavier set off for New York to take up the position of executive chef of L’Atelier deJoëlRobuchon at The Four Seasons in New York, a position which he left in 2011 to return to France for ‘personal reasons’, a representative at the time announced. While shrouded in a somewhat clandestine cloud of puzzlement as to why he left, his time there was memorable, as he earned the restaurant two Michelin stars.
Let’s hope his new role at L’Atelier London results in the same success for the restaurant, which also happens to be celebrating it’s 7thbirthday this year. With all this cause for celebration there’s only one thing for it: Hip hip hooray!
