It goes without saying that any event run by Harrods, the world-renowned department store in  Knightsbridge, London, is going to be a corker. Even more so when that event involves wine...

Harrods’ Monte Real Rioja Masterclass, which took place earlier this month in the well-stocked wine shop and private Tasting Room onHarrods’ lower ground floor, fulfilled every expectation; a tasteful evening of specially created tapas and a tutorial on one of Rioja’s most prestigious producers, Monte Real.

The Masterclass was hosted by an expert Monte Real representative, who talked guests who were looking to improve their oenological knowledge through the history of Rioja, local practices in the vineyard and wineries and uncovered a whole host of exclusive Monte Real wines. Starting with a Monte Real Rioja Blanco 2011, a barrel fermented light white Rioja, the evening flowed through the tasting of several Monte Real wines, such as the Monte Real Rioja Gran Reserva 2004, Monte Real Rioja Tinto Reserva 2006 and even a bottle from Monte Real’s wine library dating back to the 1960’s. Tapas featuring traditional Spanish aioli and chorizo was also served, along with food pairing suggestions throughout the evening. In addition, like all tasting evenings at Harrods, guests were offered the chance to browse the store cellar and take advantage of 10% off all wines featured in the masterclass.

Each month, Harrods Wine Shop features a variety of unusual wine and spirit tasting evenings. The next, a Moulin Touchais Masterclass, takes place on the 19th of April from 7-9pm. The evening promises a taste of Moulin Touchais dessert wines, which is produced in Coteaux du Layon in the Loiore Valley. Hosting the event will the Moulin Touchais property’s very own  Richard Kelley MW and Frederik Wilbrenninck.
