As a two Michelin starred chef, Chef Atul Kochhar has changed the way that Indian cuisine is perceived and experienced in the UK. His London-based restaurant, Benares combines his Indian heritage with his love of British ingredients. He takes inspiration from Indian flavours and regional dishes and creates unique and innovative modern cuisine.
Starting his culinary career at The Oberoi group of hotels in India, chef Kochhar graduated to Sous Chef at the five star deluxe Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi in 1993. Kochhar quickly moved to the fine dining restaurant of Bernard Kunig, one of the best Hilton chefs and then to London to open Tamarind. In 2001 he became the first Indian chef to receive a Michelin star at Tamarind.
Chef Kochhar set up his first independent venture, Benares in 2003, which led him to his receiving his second Michelin star in 2013, and more recently he has opened a new restaurant, Indian Essence, located in Kent, England. His cuisine aims to excited its discerning clientele and satisfy traditional palates.
